Weight Loss Success Tips for the Middle-Aged Woman

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Judith Brandy If you are like me, you have that middle-aged belly, walk a bit slower than you did when you were 20, am somewhat out of shape and looking for a way to recapture your figure of 10 years ago. Did you ever believe youd be this out-of shape? I sure didnt, but three operations and a few rounds with cancer saw me sink to a low that I never imagined. My journey towards better health and less girth started extremely slowly. I had to be able to walk up the stairs without collapsing. Making it to the top of those 15 steps was a true victory. Now, I can walk for blocks without passing out. When I approached a diet and fitness program, I looked for one that matched my current lack of fitness and compared myself to no one. Intelligent Weight Loss Before you start any type of weight loss or diet regimen, make sure its tailored to your current lifestyle, the shape your body is in and not a pipedream on television. Set reasonable goals based on your age, current weight and level of fitness and always check with your doctor for any additional tips or advice. Run from any weight loss supplement that promises you’ll shed pounds without exercise or promises excessive weight loss in a short period of time. It just doesnt work, and you could be setting yourself up for more damage than good by taking costly pills that promise miracles. Make sure you take the required nutrients while on a weight loss program, and don’t “crash” diet with a formula and just expect it to work instantly! Set reasonable weight loss goals. Record the factors that influence your weight control efforts. Be sure to include a moderate exercise program. Walking has proven to be a really easy way to get back into shape for many middle-aged people. If youre middle-aged and out of shape, unless you are really, really motivated and disciplined, forget joining a gym. Its a waste of money. Just resolve to walk each day for about 10-20 minutes (even if you need to take rest stops in the beginning). Save the gym for when you can walk more than 10 blocks without feeling dizzy and out of breath. Getting Vitamins from Organic Food Helps with Weight Loss Supplements, while good, cant do everything. Look first to the bountiful harvest that nature provides and add supplements to your food choices. Usually, by the time youre 40-something, your children are grown and you have time to research and consider what youre going to eat. Organic food may be a good option. It was found that, on average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium. Some additives found in organic food are added for legal reasons including iron, thiamine (vitamin B) and nicotinic acid (vitamin B3) in white flour, and various vitamins and minerals in different types of baby foods. Specific ingredients and additives are also not allowed in organic food: monosodium glutamate, aspartame, phosphoric acid and hydrogenated fats. The Soil Association conducted a systematic review of the evidence comparing the vitamin and mineral content of organic and conventionally grown food. An independent review of the evidence found that organic crops had significantly higher levels of all 21 nutrients analyzed compared with conventional produce including vitamin C (27% more), magnesium (29% more), iron (21% more) and phosphorous (14% more). Then, theres the stupid stuff to remember like whole-wheat bread is the better choice, because of its fiber, vitamin and photochemical content than plain white bread. You might want to add a combination of natural foods and pills to your weight loss regimen. Adding Supplements to a Weight Loss plan. A variety of vitamin supplements are labeled with phrases that market an individual product to a specific target audience: older men, heart patients, weight loss folks, competitive athletes, stressed-out women and the like. Be careful to fully research what youre about to take. Even if there are all-natural ingredients such as vitamin C and grape seed, check to see how they interact. For the best health effect, make a plan that works towards a long-term win like making garlic a part of an overall heart-and cancer-protective diet that’s low in saturated and trans fats and abundant in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans. Take care of your immune system When dieting, your immune system can sometimes take a dip. Echinacea is a very popular herbal medicine used to stimulate the immune system cells against infection. Echinacea’s health benefits include reducing the symptoms and duration of colds, flu, and sore throats, speeding up wound healing, and building immunity against chronic infections. Theres nothing worse than catching a cold to derail your fledgling efforts at better health. Health education Knowledge is power and this is no different. Go to the library or bookstore. Choose from topics like natural health, renewable energy, the environment and more. You can either visit the library or simply Google it. Either way, research and draw up a plan. Include your doctor, who will, trust me, be very helpful in working with you. How Do Candles Burn?

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Dave Krigger The other day I was hard at work in my office when a pressing question came to mind. How do candles burn? OK, so it seems I have a little too much time on my hands. Nevertheless, it is an interesting question. My wife and I make Soy Wax Candles, so we are burning candles all the time. What makes them burn, and why doesn’t the wick just burn up? It is interesting to think of the science behind candles - but then again, I am a geek. Stick with me for a minute. When you light a candle, the wick starts to burn and melts the wax around the wick. The melted wax is then absorbed into the wick and upward where the heat of the flame vaporizes the wax. It is the wax vapor that burns. The wick doesn’t burn up, because the liquid wax cools the wick. (howthingswork.com) Knowing how this works now, think about paraffin wax. Paraffin comes from refining crude oil. When wax made from paraffin vaporizes and burns, the nasty toxins in the paraffin are added to the air that you breath in your home. This is not the case with soy wax candles. It works about the same way - the wick is lit, melts the wax which is absorbed into the wick, then vaporizes and burns. The difference is that there are no toxins released into the air as you burn the candle. Soy wax is much cleaner and cooler burning. I have also noticed that scented soy wax smells a lot better that scented paraffin wax. Now that this pressing question has been answered, you are free to tackle much more difficult issues like - How to get that paraffin soot out of your drapes! Increase Your Value, Increase Your Salary

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Jill Frank Although money shouldnt be the most important factor in career decisions, it has a big impact on our lives. How much money we earn will dictate where we live, where we vacation, the lifestyle we enjoy, and how and when we will retire. When you work for someone else, you have a limited amount of control over your salary. You negotiate your starting salary and then you are given increases at management’s discretion for annual reviews and promotions. Do you want more control over your salary? By understanding and increasing the value you provide to your organization, you have the ability to increase the amount of money you can earn. Here are five ways to start increasing the value you provide to the organization and ultimately, the salary that you earn. 1. Specialize in a new area. Research upcoming trends in your industry or find an area of weakness in your organization and establish yourself as the expert. It may require additional education, training or certifications, but if you are the go-to person for all related matters, you become an indispensable asset. 2. Make a direct impact on the bottom line. The sole purpose of every company is to generate a profit. Suggest a new way to service your existing customer base to create a new income stream. If you do not work directly in a revenue producing area of business, implement new practices that will save the company money. Calculate the impact you have on the bottom line and your value will be evident. 3. Be professional at all times. Although it sounds like a no-brainer, it can be easy to get caught up in office politics. Rise above the pettiness that can occur when a group of coworkers spend more time with each other than they do with their own families. Negative attitudes can significantly lower the production of a group. Participating in trivial activities can impact your annual raises and limits your opportunities for advancement. 4. Do something different. The danger of having a routine is that you rarely leave your comfort zone. Playing it safe doesnt produce the WOW effect. Expand your focus and start taking calculated risks to drastically increase your results. Dont be afraid to speak up in meetings with new and different ideas that will bring a fresh approach to achieving organizational goals. 5. Know your market value. It’s important to keep abreast of changes in the market. Become familiar with tools and websites that provide updated salary data, know what the competition is paying, and understand your companys compensation policies. Armed with this information, you will be better equipped to negotiate annual and promotional salary adjustments. Salary is a complicated subject. Getting paid more money isnt something that can be accomplished overnight. Most organizations have a budget for salary increases that is divided among eligible employees. Put yourself in managements shoes for a minute. Is the value you provide to the company worth more or less than your colleagues? Once you take the emotional piece out of the salary equation, you can objectively create a plan to start getting paid what you are truly worth. 2006 Jill Frank. All Rights Reserved. Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alice_Erin]Alice Erin Nokia’s monumental presence has been duly recognised in the world of mobile phones. Taking good care of our growing needs and blending the best of mobile technology, Nokia has earned the faith of mobile phone users across the globe. It is Nokia’s genuine and consistent endeavour, which has made it so popular or a household name, as its digital products are second to none. Of late, Nokia released a flurry of exquisite and powerful mobile phones and the promising Nokia 6230i belongs to reputed category of highly capable mobile phones. The Nokia 6230i is not a designer phone, thus, you would not find it very attractive, but it does offer a lot in functionalities and features. Basically its design looks somewhat quirky, which is not the most favoured one of the mobile phone users. Just forget about not so cool designing, as you can have the best of it with its advanced business features, but it does not stand anywhere near to PDA or smartphone. Like other business features packed phones, you do get a basic phonebook and calender fields to fill up the required details. As far as dimensions are concerned, the Nokia 6230i measuring 103 mm x 44 mm x 20 mm and it weighs under 100 grams, which does make it somewhat lighter phone. It is loaded with a lithium ion battery, which is quite good and gives five hours of talk time and 200 hours of standby time. It comes with a shared six MB of memory, which is not good enough, but you can increase it, as it has a multimedia card slot for external memory. It comes with a VGA resolution camera, which can be used to take pictures, but you have to compromise on the quality of the pictures, as its 1 mega pixel camera is simply outclassed by the latest camera mobile phones with extensive qualities. The Nokia 6230i can be your reliable companion during leisure hours, as it comes with an MP3 player. Furthermore, it also comes with standard wired headphones and you can easily listen to all your favourite music. Like all the popular phones, you can also send SMS and MMS from your Nokia 6230i, which is further made easier with the predictive text feature. For data you can rely on GPRS and EDGE technology, which is supported by the Nokia 6230i. The Nokia 6230i cannot be your cool stylish companion, but it can prove quite a productive fellow. Understanding Unsecured Debt: The Pros And Cons

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Pranav_Das]Pranav Das What do you do when you fall in the need of money and you have no property to offer as collateral to the lender? You take an unsecured loan to fulfill your financial requirements. But are you well aware of the pros and cons of availing an unsecured loan? You must have a clear understanding of what these unsecured loans are and how can you extract maximum benefit out of them. An unsecured loan is that kind of a loan that is provided to the borrower only on the basis of a written promise of repayment. There is no need of keeping collateral before the lender as security to the loan. So, the lender is at maximum risk in case of unsecured loans while the borrower takes least risk. This is why the lender charges a high interest from the borrower. The term fixed for the repayment is short and the monthly installments are bigger. But, an [http://www.online-unsecured-loans.co.uk/unsecured-loan.html ]unsecured loan is very beneficial for tenants and other people who do not have any property to be kept as collateral. It also saves much of your time as you are free from the hassles of valuation of property and annoying documentation work. Most importantly there is no risk of repossession of your property as there is no property involved in the deal. While procuring an unsecured loan you should be aware that most of the lenders offer similar interest rates and fees but there are some lenders who offer special payment discounts that can reduce the cost of the loan. These repayment incentives or borrowers benefits can include reduction in the interest rate of the loan, fee rebates and principal balance reductions. There are a number of lenders offering various packages on unsecured loans. But to know the current market trends, understand how such loans are faring and how many are being converted into secured loans, borrowers need to understand the market well. For this, they need to research online and visit various sites. Once you find a suitable lender and a suitable unsecured loan package, you just need to fill up an online loan application form and your loan will be sanctioned within a very short period of time. Nothing Beats Online Bill Paying for Speed, Simplicity and Security

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Tom Sample Almost everyone has found themselves face-to-face with this situation: It’s 6 p.m. the day before a big bill is due, and you’ve forgotten to make the payment. What can be done to avoid big late charges? Online wire payments can often be the answer. Simple, quick and easy, this method of payment is fast becoming the way bills get paid. It used to be online payments were considered “newfangled,” unreliable and even a little scary. But, thanks to some major advancements in security, online payments are the favored method for paying everything from credit cards to mortgage payments and beyond. Even many local utility companies around the United States accept online payments readily, making them convenient for such things as electric and water bills, too. The advantages to online payments are many, and include: * Simplicity. There are no checks to write, stamps to find and envelopes to fill out. All it takes is a computer, Internet access and generally a checking account or credit card. * Speed of credit. Online payments are generally credited much more quickly than a check sent by snail mail would be accepted. In some cases, it might not be possible to avoid those late charges, but in many others online payments will make it possible. * Security. With major encryption programs now available, many online payment services are perhaps even safer than mailing paper checks. Plus, there’s no fear of the payment getting lost in the mail. It’s easy to see why so many are turning to online payments to make sure their bills get paid, but what about other uses? Online payments and wire transfers are taking over where the old wire service companies of days gone by left off. Rather than having to get into a car, go to the bank and withdraw money, and then load up and head to the wire transfer place, these online services allow customers to get it all done without leaving their own desks. Now, it’s as simple as logging on to a payment site, punching in a few numbers and hitting send. Within no time at all, the person on the other end will have the money needed for paying bills, handling emergencies or even enjoying a fun night out. The service is quick, easy and generally quite secure. When using payment services, however, customers can do themselves a favor by checking into security features. Good payment services offer encrypted protection that’s generally overseen or at least certified by another agency. Look for information about security on the web site you intend to use before proceeding. Online payments and wire transfers take the guess work and security concerns out of dealing with money. They once were considered a fad, now they’re a trend that’s showing no signs of going away. With companies from electric utilities to auto loan writers accepting payments in this manner, it’s no wonder they’re the way business is getting done. Plus, online payments are great for one-time wire transfers and even as a full-time payment method for small businesses. Quick and convenient, the services allow the transfer of money without anyone involved ever once having to go to a bank. #1 Resource http://www.acemoneytransfer.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Tom_Sample http://EzineArticles.com/?Nothing-Beats-Online-Bill-Paying-for-Speed,-Simplicity-and-Security&id=249342 order generic ultram buy online pain ultram where to buy tramadol buy tramadol online without a prescription

Acupuncture: How Can You Benefit

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Gisela Harris Acupuncture is a traditional asian healing technique that is at least 2,500 years old. It involves inserting needles into specific points on the body called meridian points. Manipulation of these needles, according to acupunctural teachings, is said to promote health and well-being by normalizing the balance of the opposing forces ‘yin’ and ‘yang’, the ‘chi’ (or Qi) energy throughout the body. Acupuncture is said to clear blockages of this energy that flows through the body. Most people in western culture had never heard of acupuncture before President Richard Nixon’s historical visit to China in 1972. This visit opened the door of East / West communications and drew back the veil on Traditional Chinese Medicine. What Kind of Ailments can be Treated? Acupuncture is particularly useful as a treatment against pain and nausea. Some ailments that can be treated with acupuncture are anxiety, depression, chronic pain, high blood pressure, menopause, migraines (and other types of headaches), fibromyalgia, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma. Even some addictions and rehabilitative therapy (such as stroke rehabilitation) can benefit from the positive effects of acupuncture. Most doctors (and even some alternative health specialists) would tell you that acupuncture is safe when included as part of a comprehensive health management program. In other words, don’t ignore what your doctor tells you. As a warning, acupuncture is not recommended for all types of illnesses. Some conditions may actually increase the risk of using acupuncture, for example breast implants, drugs, pacemaker, pregnancy. Terri Schiavo’s Lessons in Advance Directives

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jackie_Barnes] Jackie Barnes Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Freedom of press, religion, and expression. Americans traditionally see these as rights, not luxuries. Fundamentally, all these rights come down to freedom of choice. One very special American spent her last days in 2005 teaching us the importance of expressing these choices. For Terry Schiavo, the freedom to express her choices was a luxury she would never know. Whatever you believe about the right to live or the right to die, I am sure Terrys story awakened in you an awareness of the importance of making these choices known. I am just as sure that few if any of you reading this have had the hard conversations with your families to apprise them of your choices and that even fewer have completed the sanctioned forms to document these choices. It has been just over a year since Terry died- March 31, 2005. We have grown complacent and re-entrenched in our innate denial. This denial pre-ordains that the stories of Terry Schiavo, Nancy Cruzan, and Karen Ann Quinlan are destined to be repeated. In order for you to make sure that our next lesson is not happening to YOUR family, it is imperative that you take the two prong approach to making your decisions known. I call this two step plan the Say it & Display it plan. But before you can say anything to your family, you need to seek the guidance and counsel of those whom you most trust to fully discern your beliefs and wishes under a variety of circumstances. Going ahead and obtaining the forms will help you better understand the variety of situations you need to consider. You can obtain these forms in any hospital or can download them from multiple sites on the internet. Just Google Advanced Directives. The next step is to breathe life into these forms. Talk about them and fill them out. They do not require an attorney or a notary- two witnesses will do. Say it and display it. And do it soon. Terry Schiavo was only twenty-five when she collapsed and succumbed to what would become a fifteen year coma. I challenge you to make your next family dinner conversation about more than Aunt Eleanors latest candied yam recipe. There is no greater gift of love that you can give your family than to prevent them from debating over what your choices would have been, and no greater gift they can give you than to uphold those choices. And there certainly is no greater gift you can give yourself than that one final, scared luxury- of making your own choice. Please make it today. How to Grow Carrots!

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Terry Blackburn Growing Carrots Carrots are an excellent source of carotene the source of vitamin A, they are also high in fibre and they have high sugar content. They may be eaten raw, which makes them a favourite nibble for the weight-watcher; they can be cooked as a vegetable accompaniment in a meal or can be included in many main course dishes. They may be grown in frames or out in the open and there is a wide range of varieties to choose from. Soil Preparation Early carrots require deep, sandy loams soil that will warm up quickly in the spring; it must also be well drained; main-crop varieties can cope with heavier soils. The soil must be prepared the season before the crop is to be planted, freshly manured bed will make the roots fork instead of growing long and straight. Add manure and compost at the rate of 4 oz. (120g) to the sq. yd. in the autumn of the previous season, dig over heavy soil and allow it to stand rough through the winter; it will then be easily forked down in the spring. Sowing Carrots will not germinate if the soil is too cold or too wet. March is normally a good month for sowing carrots but the position should be sheltered and sunny. The alternative is to use cloches to help warm up the soil, By positioning them over the bed where the carrots are to be sown in early march, the soil will have a chance to warm up before sowing takes place. The cloches can then be left in position even after sowing if the weather has not improved. Do not sow all the seeds at the same time; make successional sowings with about 2 weeks between each sowing until the middle of April. The seeds need to be sown about in. (12mm) deep, if it is mixed with a little dry sand it will be easier to sow thinly. After the mix has been sown into two short rows it can then be raked lightly to cover the seed. Carrots can be stored and used in the winter months and for those they should be sown about the middle of April at a slightly deeper depth of in. (19mm) and about 15 in. (381mm) apart. The main sowing period comes in late July. Choose the quick-maturing varieties to make sure that the tender young roots are ready to pull in the autumn and early winter. One good point about a late sowing is that it tends not to be troubled by the formidable carrot fly, which is at its worst in early June. - Sowing Can take place as early as February/March if fleece is being used, this will mean that the carrots can be lifted in July. Therefore the soil will be cleared before the second generation of larvae develop. Seed can be sown in early June, therefore the carrots will be relatively young at laying time and much less attractive as the odour which attracts the fly in the first place has yet to develop. The carrots should then be lifted at the end of October/November, leaving the ground clear with nothing for any larvae to feed on. Take great care to sow thinly, which will make it unnecessary to thin out later for this action too helps to release odour that will be an invitation to passing flies. Terry Blackburn.
